We hit the east coast and were welcomed by clear skies and the endless Atlantic Ocean. We were in Virginia Beach, the small strip of town with overpriced food, parking, and souvenirs. But we weren't there for that, we were there for the sand and the waves. Virginia Beach was an important milestone for our trip because we made it as far east as we could go. We felt accomplished making it all the way to the coast by car and in a sense, it is the halfway point of the trip.
Before making it to Virginia Beach, we stayed at a campsite next to a gorgeous lake in Newport News. One of the campsite employees told us to stay out of the south side of town because it was "bad news."
It was hot, hot, hot. We weren't allowed to swim unfortunately.
There were tons of these little frogs hopping at our feet.
We also found this crawdad crawling around. Paranoid little guy.
Driving on a bridge over Chesapeake Bay to the beach.
We finally made it to the Atlantic Ocean. A monumental step for the trip. Side note: can you find the same boy twice in this photo?
Peter throwing a wobbler. We played catch in the ocean for hours.
The beach was packed with people, but we didn't mind at all. Happy enough just to find a swimmable body of water to escape the heat and humidity.
The Beach Boys.
Virginia Beach is a huge tourist destination. Kind of had a Santa Monica Pier type of feel. Peter purchased a cheap pair of sunglasses in one of these tacky gift shops.
Wolf enjoying a happy hour rum and coke at an overpriced, understaffed shit restaurant.
On our way into North Carolina from Virginia Beach we encountered a serious lightning storm. Here is a photo of one that touched down in Dismal Swamp State Park. According to the local news, approximately 1600 lightning bolts touched down in the region that night.
We were crossing our fingers that we didn't get put in room 240.
Bingo.
