Of all of our pit stops across the country, the one to the movie site of the Field of Dreams was at the top of our lists. These hallowed grounds where Kevin Costner set up baseball games for the ghosts of the cornfield in Dyersville, Iowa are American legend. People we talked to deemed it a "tourist trap," but we disagreed wholeheartedly. Unfortunately; in a few months, they will carve a little league baseball complex out of the cornfield, so we were lucky enough to see it in its full integrity.
The field is well kept and people are free to play pick up baseball games. We grabbed our wood bat and gloves and hit the field...
Scene from Field of Dreams - "If you build it, he will come."
Curious readers of this fine blog will be interested to know that Peter only saw the first ten minutes of "Field of Dreams" when it was originally released in 1989. His mom and dad had the bizarre notion that, at age 3 months, he would be intrigued by this property and sit quietly through the entire film. Needless to say, that didn't work out, and consequently sat in the lobby of the Lloyd Center theaters with his dad until the movie was over. Miraculously, he quieted down once in the arms of his mom (Dad went back into the theater and watched the next showing). That was a few years ago, but the shots of this field provide some comfort that its soul remains. Keep on keepin' on, guys...You are on an epic journey! Dad x
ReplyDeleteGreat story, Joe!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing that story, Dad. Readers should also know that my dad, Jerry Jazz, went to the Field of Dreams when I was a child and was a major inspiration in my interest in the place. Is it true too you hit a home run into the corn field?
ReplyDeleteGreat post. Stevie still has the proper pitching form and Peter looks like McGuire at the plate.... well........
ReplyDeleteStevie and I visited the Baseball Hall of Fame and this is the only other baseball treat I would love to visit...... other than a Seattle World Series (but that won't happen anytime soon)......
