Bball, Bars, and Brian

When we left Omaha, we had a nice drive moseying through Missouri, Nebraska, Iowa, and finally Kansas. We saw the Royals win an extra inning thriller against the Braves and drove west forty minutes to Lawrence.

We tried camping out in a stagnant lake campground late that night, but there was an eerie feel about the place. It was deserted and pitch black with coyotes, deer, and who knows what else running around our car. It was close to 100 degrees and humid, with every type of insect imaginable smeared against Black Sally's windshield. We decided against setting up our tent outside so we tried toughing it out in the car. After 15 minutes or so of sleep attempts, we got the hell out of there.

At 2 AM, we found a place called the Virginia Inn in northwestern Lawrence, which had air conditioning and beds. Every bed we have found on this trip has been spectacular. We ended up staying in this place for three nights and recharged from the endless days of driving. Here are some of our encounters in Lawrence:

Lightning storm viewed from outside our Virginia Inn room.

Watching the draft through a glitchy signal from the storm. Atta boy Kasemi. Oursalami!

Went to a Starbucks and talked with a guy about Portland's pickup of KU's Jeff Withey.

Still at Starbucks.

We were pointed in the direction of Massachusetts Street. We walked the street scoping out some spots for later that night and hit up a vintage clothing store and a Jayhawk's spirit store.

We heard live music outside of a bar and stopped in. Apparently it was screamo punk night...

Inside the historic Allen Fieldhouse, where the Jayhawk's basketball team plays, we wandered around the hall of fame. They had enough basketball trophies and memorabilia to fill Kauffman Stadium.

Peter and the Wolf inside the hall.

Snuck into the arena. Couldn't miss the opportunity.

Peter trying to steal the basketball from James Naismith, the inventor of the game.

We are responsible. But the taxi service we were recommended turned out to be the worst service in town. They were an hour late and refused to take us back to the Virginia.

Typical Lawrence bar bathroom...

Enjoying our solo pitchers over a game of pool.

Can't explain this one...

Hangin' with the locals on Massachusetts St. More to come from our friend on the left. Man on right was very emotional that night.

Peter getting to know Brian.

Fellow travelers "Russo and Kelly," playing some tunes to make enough money to hit the next town en route to the best coast.

Since our taxi service failed us, Brian was nice enough to give us a ride back to the Viginia. The least we could do was offer him a drink. He quickly took us up on that one.

Didn't quickly leave.

Snapped a quick picture of the Inn. We were off to Oklahoma Joe's to eat some world famous BBQ.
